Post Spring ESSC Reflections (2)

A Compelling Testimony about a Career that Worked – Complete trusting and surrendering to God

Brother Yu’s testimony during this ESSC deeply touched my heart. He shared a detailed account of how he received a match to a Neurology residency program in New York. His gratitude towards God for His grace and guidance in leading him to this opportunity to become a physician in the United States was truly inspiring.

Brother Yu spoke about his upbringing in the church and how, by God’s grace and blessings, he was admitted to his second top-ranked college. He also testified about his journey of obtaining two PhD degrees—one from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and another from a medical college in Shanghai, China. Through his experiences, I learned that God blessed him because of his unwavering faith. God remembered him through his advisors who recognized his dedication, honesty, and diligence in his studies and research.

Moreover, Brother Yu expressed his gratitude to God for bringing his wife into his life while he was in Omaha. Shortly after they met, he brought her to our Chicago church. During their attendance at the ESSC and on their way back home, he felt that God had prepared her to be his future wife. She later embraced baptism and became his life partner. In the same year that he received his first PhD in the United States, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter in 2016. Additionally, he shared how God facilitated their immigration process through a chance encounter between his wife and her alumni in a parking lot, where her friend provided crucial information. These incidents taught me the importance of acknowledging God in all our ways, as stated in Proverbs 3:6: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path.”

Brother Yu then recounted his journey of overcoming challenges and difficulties in securing a match to the neurology residency program in Match 2023. I was truly moved when he mentioned how a sister from the church had cared for his accommodation during his internship in Chicago last year. Her encouragement and teaching of “none of self and all of thee” greatly contributed to his self-confidence and success in interviews. Throughout the process of seeking opportunities for interviews, he came to understand the meaning of Matthew 7:7: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you.”

From Brother Yu’s testimony spanning the past ten years of his life, I have learned that God loves us even in our lowest moments. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). It saddens me to bid farewell to Brother Yu as he departs from the Chicago church to join the Flushing church in New York in June. On the other hand, I am glad that he will start his career in a new direction. May God continue to guide him, bless him, and his family, as he mentioned in his testimony.

I sincerely hope that you will join us on the journey to the Kingdom of Heaven. You are pre-invited to attend our Fall ESSC (14-17 September, 2023) and experience another enriching spiritual feast within our loving and inclusive church family.
