The verse from 1 Timothy outlines three sources of strength for our spiritual devotion. The first is “godliness,” which is crucial because it focuses on our reliance on God. When we approach both God and our lives with an attitude of piety, the Lord Jesus recognizes our faith and empowers us, enabling us not just to accomplish tasks but to excel at them. This aligns with what the Bible says in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Secondly, we should also “exercise” ourselves in godliness. Spiritual devotion isn’t solely an individual act; it’s a communal one as well. Believe in God should lead to mutual support. We should continually practice love in our interactions, and if that love is mutual and fulfilling, it will radiate both inwardly and outwardly. This creates a community that uplifts each other, aligning with God’s intention for us. Romans 8:28 reinforces this: “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Lastly, beyond divine and communal strength, we should also exercise personal strength. Being a Christian doesn’t mean becoming a lazy or dependent individual. In contrast, the Bible continually urges us to be well-prepared, take responsibility, and act as faithful stewards of the gifts we’ve been given.

Set your mind on heavenly, not earthly matters, as Paul advises in Colossians 3:2. Continually strive to relinquish worldly desires and behaviors, replacing them with spiritual virtues that align with Christ’s character. Keep this focus as you grow in transformative knowledge of God, aiming for the ultimate Christian goal of eternal rest with Him.
In your journey of faith, remember that unity transcends all human-defined boundaries, as Paul and Jesus emphasize. Be mindful of those who are marginalized or weaker in faith, offering both spiritual and tangible support to meet the needs of the entire church community. By doing so, you not only uphold the teachings of the apostolic church but also fulfill the law of Christ—loving and serving in both word and deed.
As a Christian counselor, focus on building genuine relationships to guide those seeking advice, underpinned by a deep, spiritual connection with God. Master the art of active listening and maintain eye contact to create a trust-filled space for your counselees. Remember that your ultimate goal is not just to offer advice, but to understand the depths of your counselees’ hearts and guide them towards a more meaningful relationship with Christ.
