When we are young, our zest for life and curiosity often drives us to learn and discover new passions. Olympians, encouraged by their coaches, exemplify this drive as they push harder to lead and achieve new heights, set records, and balance life’s demands. They make the difficult look easy.
Four fundamental needs play a crucial role in achieving a balanced and happy life: God, Family, Work, and Leisure. These pillars provide the necessary framework for personal growth, happiness, and a sense of purpose. Faith in God gives you an inner strength and a sense of balance and perspective in life.
God—From Old to New with a Purpose Fall marks the start of planning for the new year, from work to school to home. It’s a time to learn from past mistakes and aim for better. Isaiah 43:18-19 says, “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
Just as Olympians lead in sports, we lead in our own way, particularly within our families and at work. Understanding our purpose on earth and growing into it is essential. What does it take to be a leader? It takes deliberate moves…
- Taking off the old self (especially the bad habits)
- Putting on (clothed) the NEW self. To be clothed is to have the right standing with God (2 Corinthians 5:1-5)
Colossians 3:9-10 emphasizes this transformation: “You have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”
Family—From the Oldest to the Youngest Family responsibilities span from caring for seniors to nurturing young children. We must honor and respect our elders as taught by Jesus. For the younger ones, we must be cautious of our actions and words. Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit for strength, perseverance and understanding His will. Here are some examples to consider:
- Unintended dishonesty: Avoid lying about children’s ages to save money; it sets a bad example.
- Short temper and rage: Control road rage and avoid lashing out, as it diminishes our credibility.
- Comparing children: Don’t compare children to others; it can hinder their potential and self-esteem.
- Neglecting spouse: Prioritize your marriage to provide children with a sense of security.
Work—From Work to Home (Flexibility and Leadership)
Leadership is crucial for handling life’s challenges and finding opportunities in difficulties. A 2024 global workforce survey revealed the top three job drivers: generous compensation, flexible working hours, and high job security. Flexibility is key across all demographics.
Incorporating flexibility means balancing work and personal life, including faith and worship. The goal is the work God does in us while we wait. Waiting deepens and matures us, levels our perspective, and broadens our understanding. Tests of time determine whether we can endure season of seemingly unfruitful preparations, and indicate whether we can recognize and seize the opportunities that come our way. God prepares leaders patiently, like Noah who waited 120 years for the rain, Abraham who waited 25 years for a promised son, Joseph who waited 14 years in prison, and Job who waited a lifetime for justice.
Leisure—From Head to Toes (Physical, Emotional, Relational Wellness) God established the Sabbath for rest. Taking time to renew ourselves spiritually, physically (from head to toes), emotionally, and socially is crucial. Fellowship with God and others fosters new relationships and experiences, promoting continuous growth.
When well-rested, we can better handle life’s challenges and grow spiritually. Learning begins with relatable Bible stories and advances to understanding deeper spiritual truths through parables. The Holy Spirit guides us to understand and do God’s will.
Prioritizing God and Achieving Balance Make God your top priority. Rest and listen to His whisper. Schedule your priorities rather than prioritizing your schedule.
Here are a few overarching tips for achieving balance:
- Humility: Never stop learning about God and others.
- Hunger: Seek your purpose in life.
- Heart: Give to receive—Acts 20:35says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
- Heads-up: Build relationships with God and people.
By focusing on these pillars and incorporating God’s teachings into our daily lives, we can achieve a balanced and fulfilling life. For God is love. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
