Mending the Rifts – The Watcher Must Discern
When I hear negative information about friends or family, or misunderstandings arise, it affects my relationship with them. If not resolved in time, it could lead to estrangement. The story of David and his friend Jonathan in 1 Samuel chapters 19 and 20 perfectly reflects my feelings and offers a valuable lesson.
Due to Saul’s jealousy and desire to kill David, Jonathan, upon hearing his father’s plans, promptly warned David. He spoke well of David to Saul, which temporarily quelled Saul’s intent to harm David. After being reassured that Saul no longer sought to kill David, Jonathan brought David back to Saul. However, when an evil spirit came upon Saul, he attempted to kill David, who then fled. Despite the unexpected turn of events, which could have led to a misunderstanding between David and Jonathan, David did not let the misunderstanding grow. His first action after fleeing was to find Jonathan, inquire, and reaffirm his trust, with Jonathan’s help escaping again.
Three aspects of this story are particularly helpful to me. First, David and Jonathan communicated well, addressing issues as soon as they arose. Second, their mutual love, as Jonathan loved David “because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul”, and David’s lament for Jonathan, “I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me” after Jonathan’s death, shows the depth of their bond. Third, and most importantly, their relationship was witnessed by God. Often, human wisdom alone is insufficient to discern truth because only “His understanding is unsearchable.“
