The Bible provides clear instructions on what it means to fear God. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all.” This reminds us that God is just and that everything, including hidden things, whether good or evil, will be brought into judgment by God. It also emphasizes that God examines the heart of man, so we should be vigilant about our actions and motives.
Fearing God is not about being afraid but rather about having a respectful and reverent attitude of obedience towards Him. This mindset is characterized by reverence and submission to God. Psalm 111:10 admonishes us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Those who fear God humbly accept His word and teachings and seek to obey His will.
To fear God, we need to serve Him with sincerity and reverence. We should approach God’s Word and commands with a sense of awe for His holiness and righteousness. For example, in our engagement with society, such as reading the Bible, we should approach it with a reverent heart. We should also approach God with humility, seeking His wisdom and guidance. This involves praying to God, obeying His will, guidance, and teachings, rather than following our own desires and worldly values.
John 4:24 states, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” As we grow spiritually, our pursuit of God’s intention should also undergo a transformation. We should be willing to change according to the renewal of our minds. Some may seek God because of illness, while others may seek Him due to the hardships of life. However, we must not remain stagnant in our initial intentions.
Therefore, to fear God, we need to obey His will. We should serve God with sincerity, obedience, and reverence, offering Him our worship with piety and respect. When we truly fear God, we make His Word the standard for our lives, acting with integrity, righteousness, and love, living out His Word instead of merely speaking it. When we truly comprehend God’s uniqueness, His omnipotence, and His eternity, we can wholeheartedly obey and fear God!
