The Path of Choice

Who is the man that fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.” (Psalm 25:12, NKJV)

In life, we often find ourselves in situations where we must make choices. When shopping, we must choose what to buy. When taking entrance exams, we must choose a major. When seeking employment, we must choose a career. When getting married, we must choose a spouse. In meetings, we must choose among different opinions. Even choosing not to decide is, in itself, a choice.

Choice is a freedom. Every person has been given free will by God and can choose what they believe to be best. However, choice can also be painful, because every individual must take responsibility for their words and actions, both before themselves and others. As we journey through life, we may feel like abandoned orphans, standing at countless crossroads, uncertain of which path to take. But thankfully, we have an all-knowing God who understands which road is best for us.

The Philistines camped at Shunem, preparing to battle against Israel. When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid, and his heart trembled. He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him. Desperate, Saul went to Endor to consult a medium, asking her to bring up Samuel’s spirit so he could seek guidance.

Meanwhile, the Amalekites invaded the southern land, attacked Ziklag, and took the women and children captive. In response, David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And God answered, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.” (1 Samuel 30:8, NKJV) David pursued the enemy, overtook them, and achieved victory, rescuing the captives.

Saul’s rebellion against God led to his downfall, and he received no answer from the Lord. In contrast, David feared the Lord and was guided to the right path. May we take Saul’s failure as a lifelong warning and follow David’s example of reverence for God. In doing so, we will always be able to discern the path God wants us to take, no matter the circumstances.
