Spiritual Growth Wave 1 IA Content 3

The Reality of Temptation

Even Jesus faced temptation before He began His ministry (Matthew 4:1), teaching us that no believer is exempt from this test. Temptation often arises:

  1. After a spiritual breakthrough– Just as Jesus was tempted after His baptism, new believers often face immediate trials.
  2. Before serving God– Those passionate about ministry will encounter spiritual opposition.
  3. When alone– Isolation makes one vulnerable to temptation.
  4. During physical weakness– The devil attacks when we are weary, hungry, or vulnerable.

The Purpose of Temptation

The Greek word Peirazó means both “temptation” and “trial.” The same event can be viewed in two ways:

  • God allows trialsto strengthen and refine us.
  • The devil temptsto destroy us and lead us away from God.

James 1:13 makes it clear that God does not tempt anyone, but He allows trials for our growth. James 1:14 explains that temptation arises because of our own desires, which Satan exploits to lure us into sin.

The Danger of Falling into Temptation

Sin starts small but grows if left unchecked (James 1:15). Like a trap set for an animal, the devil uses desires—money, fame, pleasure—to ensnare us, leading to spiritual destruction.

How to Overcome Temptation

  1. Follow Jesus’ Example– He overcame temptation through prayer, fasting, and the power of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 4:2).
  2. Use God’s Word– Jesus responded to Satan’s temptations with Scripture.
  3. Seek the Holy Spirit’s Strength– Human effort alone is not enough; victory comes through reliance on God.
  4. Practice Fasting and Prayer– Denying the flesh strengthens spiritual discipline and self-control.

The Three Major Temptations (1 John 2:16)

  1. The Lust of the Flesh– Physical desires and indulgence.
  2. The Lust of the Eyes– Materialism and greed.
  3. The Pride of Life– Arrogance, status, and self-glory.

Victory Through Struggle

Every believer must face these battles daily. Falling into temptation does not mean the end—it is an opportunity for repentance and growth. A victorious Christian is not someone who has never stumbled, but one who overcomes through faith and perseverance.

Ultimately, God allows temptation not to break us, but to strengthen us, refining our faith so that we may stand firm and inherit eternal life.
