Teachings from Bible about Loneliness

Everybody has days when they just need some alone time. Naturally, if we are alone for long periods, we may feel lonely. However, the Bible records many examples of people who were alone; despite that, they moved forward, overcame challenges, and were rewarded.

Jesus, who suffered, died alone, and was forsaken on the cross, overcame and now sits at the right hand of God. Elijah, a frightened, weary, and lonely fugitive, overcame his trials and was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Joseph, who was wrongly accused, betrayed, and enslaved, overcame his hardships to not only become the prime minister of Egypt but also be reunited with his father.

As Christians in the world today, we will inevitably experience times when we are alone, as well as moments when we feel lonely. When we are lonely, our hearts feel empty, as if there were a hole inside us. However, there are some things we should never forget, for they are the precious promises God has given us, His children.

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands…” (Isaiah 49:15-16)

“…And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

These verses are among many that declare Jesus’ great love for us. They not only testify to His love, but also promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us. While God has blessed us with friends and family, we must remember that, above all, God is always with us. Therefore, we need to learn to cling to Christ in all things – striving to draw closer to Him, to know and love Him more deeply, and to strengthen our relationship with Him so we can be the ambassadors of Christ.

Loneliness is not an easy problem to deal with, as it is often persistent and long-lasting. To overcome it, we must trust in God’s love for us. Remember, we are never truly alone – both in Spirit with our brothers and sisters and in the love of God, our Father and Friend, who is always near us.
