Discovering Your Strength and Overcoming Your Weakness

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to u, let us use them….” (Romans 12:6). This verse implies that everyone has unique talent and missions given by God as tools to serve others and glorify Him at church, at home, and at our career. How can we discover our strengths? Here are specific methods:

  1. Self-reflection, Prayer, and Receiving Feedback from Others

Spend time praying to God, asking Him to reveal and make known your strengths and missions. Reflect on tasks that inspire passion and a sense of achievement, as these feelings often indicate personal strengths. Also, feedback from colleagues, friends, and spiritual buddies often reveals unnoticed talents. Therefore, humbling ourselves in front of God and learning from others around us is one effective way to discover our strengths.

  1. Identifying Our Advantages through Serving God

A brother in Christ, passionate about audio recording, continuously helped the church with related works. When preparing his college application, he prayed for God’s guidance and applied to study a major on professional recording. Eventually, he was accepted by two prestigious art universities in Tainan and Taipei. Through this experience, he genuinely understood that He will clear the way for us when we faithfully serve Him with the gifts He gave us.

  1. Reviewing Past Experiences

Reflecting on past problem-solving experiences or achievements helps identify unique abilities such as leadership, analytical skills, or communication talents. These talents can significantly enhance team collaboration in the workplace, allowing the team to achieve maximum effectiveness through our contributions.

After discovering our strengths, let’s also discuss how to overcome our weaknesses. As Christians, we acknowledge our weaknesses and rely on God’s strength. “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Weaknesses are not symbols of shame but opportunities for us to rely on God and collaborate with others. Here are specific methods for us to overcome weaknesses:

  1. Humbly Accept Your Weaknesses

The first step toward growth is to openly admit weaknesses, and there is no need to hide or feel ashamed. We can pray to God for His wisdom and guidance on direction of growth.

  1. Learn and Improve

We can take courses, training, or read professional books targeting specific skills needed for improvement. Embrace constructive criticism as an opportunity to learn and grow.

  1. Build Spiritual and Professional Partnerships

Working with people possessing different skills can leverage the complementary strengths within a team. Humbly seeking advice from experienced individuals and trusting that they will be happy to share the reasons and secrets of their succession allows us to gain timely guidance and assistance, reducing unnecessary trial-and-error.

  1. Effectively Utilize Resources

With rapidly evolving technology, use technological tools or available resources to integrate and overcome your shortcomings. For instance, utilizing time management software can enhance planning capabilities.

For Christians in the workplace, discovering strengths and overcoming weaknesses is a continuous journey of seeking balance and breakthroughs. Through reflection, humility, and collaboration, we can fully utilize God’s gifts and witness His power through our lives. Ultimately, this process not only fosters personal growth but also glorifies God and benefits others.
