Mending the Rifts – In mending, pay attention to your words and attitude

“Speaking harshly” was how a friend of mine used to describe me, and it was a struggle I faced in the past. Not knowing how to communicate effectively could not only lead to misunderstandings with others but also cause severe harm in certain situations, like when I attempted to apologize. However, one thing I overlooked was how my hurtful words were closely linked to my improper attitude.

Often, due to my lack of appropriate attitude and words, even if I apologized, I still didn’t receive forgiveness from others. Instead, it might deepen misunderstandings and widen the rift between us. “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1 NKJV). Gentle and sincere words can resolve conflicts and misunderstandings between people. Of course, these words should also be accompanied by our sincere attitude. In the story of Joseph recorded in Genesis, his brother Benjamin wept on his neck when they were reunited, showing remorse for having sold Joseph into Egypt when he was younger (Genesis 45:14). In Matthew, it is recorded how Peter wept bitterly when he realized he had denied Jesus three times. These emotions of sorrow reflect their regret and pain. If I could apologize and reconcile with others with such an attitude, who could resist my sorrowful heart?

A genuine attitude and soft words can not only heal the rifts between me and others but also allow us to be open and honest with each other, resolving misunderstandings and forgiving each other’s mistakes. Of course, this is also key to repenting before God, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17 NKJV), because “The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy” (Psalm 103:8 NKJV), but “nor let us tempt Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:9 NKJV).
