Mending the Rifts – In mending, we must learn to “forget.”

The biggest barrier to mending my relationships with others is “I can’t forget.” Because I can’t forget or let go, I find it impossible to genuinely forgive those who’ve hurt or misunderstood me. Even if on the surface I’ve forgiven them, deep down, there’s already a divide. This isn’t the way to truly repair relationships, but I found the answer in the Bible on how to “forget”!

When I felt hurt or misunderstood by others, I thought of myself as pitiful. But then, I learned about someone “even more pitiful” – Joseph (Genesis 37-50). Joseph was sold to Ishmaelites by his brothers, who were jealous of their father’s love for him, leading him to end up in Egypt. At such a young age and full of trust in his brothers, he was betrayed by those closest to him. Later, as the governor of Egypt, when a great famine led his brothers to Egypt to buy grain, he didn’t seek revenge but instead forgave and treated them kindly. Joseph saw the bigger picture from God: had he not been sold into Egypt, he wouldn’t have become governor, and without him, his family might have perished in the famine.

I realize I can’t dwell on the pain in front of me; I need to see God’s arrangement or lessons beyond the suffering. If I can’t let go or forget others’ faults or misunderstandings, I can’t face them properly, nor can I mend our relationships, missing out on God’s grace. We must learn to forgive, for “The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever.” (Psalm 103:8-9 NKJV)
