Mending the Rifts – Watchers must be honest

Due to shyness, fear of bothering others, and other factors, I often find myself not speaking my truth. This leads to misunderstandings about my thoughts and can even cause negative impacts. For instance, I don’t know how to refuse others at times, or I succumb to peer pressure, doing things against my will just because everyone else is doing them. The Bible shares a story about a couple punished by God for their dishonesty.

In Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira, a married couple, lied about selling their property and donating all the proceeds to the church, keeping part of the money for themselves, which led to their divine punishment. Had they been honest and not tried to deceive God and the community, they could have been forgiven and saved their lives. They might have lied out of a desire for praise or due to peer pressure, fearing exclusion or mockery. Regardless of the reason, their dishonesty cost them their lives.

Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” I often worry about being mocked, excluded, or despised by others, but these fears are unnecessary. Truth cannot be falsified, and lies cannot sustain for long. “Therefore, putting away lying, ‘Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,’ for we are members of one another.” Only through honesty can we reduce misunderstandings and support each other, as seen in the sincere friendship between David and Jonathan. If you’re worried about lacking courage, remember, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
