Mending the Rifts – The watchman must “bow their head.”

“The sky embraces all creation, the sea accepts all rivers.” “Step back, and the sea and sky broaden” – these were the words my grandfather frequently shared with me. As a child, I couldn’t grasp their meaning. Why should I yield to others? Wouldn’t that put me at a disadvantage? It’s because I didn’t heed my grandfather’s advice that I faced many difficulties in my interpersonal relationships as I grew up. But back then, I still couldn’t comprehend why I should bow to others. Wouldn’t that just show I was weak and easily bullied? Now, I’ve started to understand.

In the process of interpersonal interaction, conflicts often arise from a clash of ideologies or someone not “saving my face.” Ideological differences can be resolved through communication and discussion, but saving face benefits me in no way; it only satisfies my vanity. Matthew 5:39 says, “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” By showing humility and gentleness, I can not only avoid conflicts but also win people’s hearts. If we are to be humble even towards “evil people,” how much more should we be with those around us!

Lowering my head not only prevents or escalates conflicts, but most importantly, it allows me to see the path beneath my feet and the direction God is showing me. If I am stubborn, I will not see where I am stepping; even if there’s a precipice ahead, I would be unaware. Jesus Christ, who was seated on the throne in heaven, willingly descended to earth to suffer and be humiliated for us. Jesus has set an example for us, so we must also learn God’s gentleness, kindness, patience, and humility.
