Your Heart is Where Your Treasure is
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  Matthew 6:21. There is nothing wrong with pursuing a fulfilling career which can in turn be equipping you with the competencies to serve God.  But if the pursuit takes you away from worshipping and loving God intimately, then it becomes dangerous at the heart level.  Instead of valuing and building treasure on earth, Christ urged His followers to store up treasures in Heaven (Matthew 6:19-20).

Cross check yourself daily…where and what have you spent most of your time, money and energy.  What causes you anxiety?  Make the time to assess and guard your heart.  Center your heart on Jesus to cast out the unworthy worldly desires.

How can you Guard your Heart?

Watch out for what you invest in.  When we invest in something, it begins to matter to us; and we invest in the things that matter to us.

It is not that money is evil, nor is it to suggest that we should not save or should not invest time or efforts into “worldly” things. It is the love of money instead of God, that is the problem.  “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  1 Timothy 6:10.

From a Godly perspective, our earthly treasures are tools. Ultimately, they all belong to God and we are to steward them wisely (Luke 16:10–13).

So, by guard your desires, and consider where you can say no and set up healthy boundaries around your heart.  These boundaries can prevent what is coming in to your heart and also allowing what goes out from your heart.  Guarding your heart helps you protect what you indulge in and where your eyes are fixated.

Watch what you say for it comes from your heart

“The mouth of the righteous is a well of life, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.  Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins.  Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding, but a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding.  Wise people store up knowledge, But the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.”  Proverbs 10:11-14

We spend more time at work than we do at home or any other place.  Therefore, most of our interactions and conversations are with our colleagues.  Have you been wounded by the words of someone at work or you doing the same to someone else?  The words of God bring healing, love, understanding, and grace to all around Him.  So, what words have come out of your mouth which reveal the health condition of your heart?

Let us seek God with a pure heart and in doing so, will take you and others affected by you to be in closer intimacy with God.  Let us become ambassadors of God while we are still working on our career and also beyond…through retirement.  Face it, we have more time available to serve as His ambassador and do good for others.
