Graduating from college during the dotcom boom, I was blessed with numerous job offers, eventually joining a company close to my church, maintaining my spirituality. The transition from college to work brought excitement but also anxiety, especially about integrating into a new team and meeting performance expectations. This narrative is a reflection on navigating the first year of full-time employment, emphasizing the importance of diligence, openness about my faith, and the power of prayer in the workplace.
Initially overwhelmed by concerns about my performance and the lack of formal feedback, I dedicated myself to hard work and daily prayers for guidance and productivity. This diligence, inspired by Paul’s encouragement in Colossians, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance” (3:23-24), eventually led to recognition and more challenging projects, affirming that perseverance and faithfulness in work, as in service to God, do not go unnoticed.
I also learned the importance of not hiding my Christian faith. An experience from a college internship, where I feared requesting time off for a theological seminar, taught me that openness about my beliefs could lead to understanding and respect from employers, echoing the sentiment that young people should engage in character development and spiritual growth.
The most profound lesson came from a challenging project that coincided with a spiritual convocation at church. Juggling odd hours and church commitments, I initially failed to seek God’s assistance, feeling my work concerns were too secular for His concern. However, after prayers, I witnessed what I considered a miraculous resolution to the project challenges, reinforcing my understanding of God’s care for all aspects of our lives, including our professional endeavors.
This experience underscored the importance of entrusting our work to God, remembering that without His blessing, our efforts are in vain (Psalm 127:1-2). Embracing the belief that “I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) not only applies to personal trials but extends to overcoming workplace challenges, reinforcing the power of faith in God’s provision and guidance in every aspect of life.
