Filling the Void Within—Life Beyond Emptiness

I set my mind to understand wisdom and madness and folly; I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.” Reflecting on this passage made me ponder the meaning of life. Whether wise or foolish, our endeavors often feel like chasing shadows. We all have life goals, yet some spend their entire lives without reaching them, while others who do find no satisfaction, quickly setting new targets. Neither type truly achieves their real objectives. We all strive to push our limits and grow, whether in knowledge, character, or emotions, but ultimately, we can never fully master all knowledge, attain perfect character, or live without emotional regrets. So, what are we really seeking?

More knowledge? “For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.” The more we know, the more we worry, and we can never return to the simpler, happier times of the past. A better life, more pleasures? “All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.” Human desires are insatiable… “Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.” Compared to the universe, our lives are but a fleeting moment—does that not render life’s meaning void? Yet, we must not forget who bestowed life upon the universe, who set the order of all things. What we truly yearn for are the genuine joys and happiness, the eternal beauty we aspire to. If happiness were bound by time, it would always carry regrets, but God is eternal. Thus, only by connecting everything with God can we break the barriers of time and receive eternal joy from Him. How do we seek this eternal God?

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” God is always waiting for us, waiting for us to turn back to Him. And God is not just watching us from heaven; He came down to earth, shed His blood, and tasted death for us—all to reconcile us to Him and let us find rest in Him. All we need to do is be baptized and follow God’s teachings, walking in His steps.

What we are truly seeking, what we long for, is a resting place for our souls, an abundance in our hearts—Heaven. What we deeply desire is “love,” God Himself. So, let us not merely settle for transient satisfaction and joy; let’s step forward towards God, because He has given us life and meaning!
