Filling the Void Within—Avoiding Escape
Whenever I encounter difficulties, my instinctive reaction is to escape—scrolling through my phone, watching TV—to “forget” about these issues. However, this doesn’t solve anything. As time passes, the problems pile up, eventually overwhelming me. To make myself feel “better,” I engage in more pointless activities, trapping myself in a vicious cycle. So, how do I break free from this harmful pattern? If I decide to face and solve these issues, I must first clearly recognize where the problems lie. Isaiah 30:20 states, “Though the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner anymore, but your eyes shall see your teachers.” Recognizing God and understanding His intentions, my attitude towards difficulties has changed. These “hardships” are not just obstacles but lessons from God to perfect and mature me. Once I understand the problem, the next step is change, but how can I overcome myself and make that change?
Trying to change through my own strength is a painful process and likely to fail. As Romans 7:18 says, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.” Following our natural human desires is easy, but God knows our weaknesses and has given us the Holy Spirit. After we receive the Holy Spirit, as mentioned in Romans 8, “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Only with God’s strength can we truly change and confidently face ourselves and the world.
“Whoever covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” Because God is merciful, “near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” When we bravely confront our weaknesses and overcome them with God’s help, the colors of our life will become richer and more vibrant.
