Let’s Take Off Our Blindfolds
“And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: ‘My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him” (Hebrews 12:5-6)
Trials, or we may call them storms, often discourage us in life. We feel discouraged because we are blindfolded. For those with physical health issues, the blindfold can be the pain they must endure or the looming suffering they foresee. For those with mental health issues, the blindfold can be the persistent thoughts that drag them back to the past or the relentless anxiety that prevents them from moving forward. Although these are valid reasons, they remain superficial.
Let’s remove our blindfolds; the Bible has already revealed why we are discouraged. It is because we are forgetful – it is all too easy to forget that our Lord Jesus Christ loves and cares for us at all times, and His plans are always the best. When we forget God, our focal point shifts inward, toward ourselves. Did you notice that all the ‘blindfolds’ mentioned earlier were centered on ‘self’? This is not a suggestion to ignore our illness or any other realities, but rather an encouragement to find new motivation in life so that we can lift our stalling feet again and start moving forward again.
“For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died” (2 Corinthians 5:14)
Sometimes what we see is so encouraging…filled with success and pleasure. But look closer. Are these encouraging views of this world or from God? Are they edifying in God’s perspective? Sometimes all that appears to be well and comfortable are not necessarily good for us. If you are in a luxury comfortable boat, then would you want to jump off into stormy waters to walk on water with Christ?
Long story short, in good times and rough times, let us examine the situation and ourselves and cross check against God’s navigation towards eternal life. Are you on track or off course? Pray for His wisdom to discern and recognize any situation that leads to a new and eternal life with Him.
If we recognize the love of God, we will remember that God chastens who He loves. “For whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” (Hebrews 12:6) It is not easy – again, it is not easy – but if we remember God, recall His promises recorded in the Bible, and surrender to Him, all will be well. Have faith, and let’s begin moving toward Him – one step at a time.
Come join us so we can move toward our Lord Jesus Christ together! We look forward to seeing you and worshiping our true God together. Join us in the upcoming Fall Evangelical Service and Spiritual Convocation (ESSC) in September.
