Continue Praying with Thanksgiving Even in Trials

The saying “Mens sana in corpore sano,” meaning “a healthy mind in a healthy body,” highlights the connection between physical and mental health. Today, promoting physical and mental well-being through good habits is common, but spiritual health should have our full attention at all times. Paul acknowledged the benefits of physical exercise but stressed the importance of godliness, which benefits us both now and in the life to come (1 Tim 4:8). For believers, maintaining spiritual health is crucial, as it influences our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. When spiritually healthy, we can endure physical ailments and emotional challenges more effectively. Thus, cultivating spiritual habits is essential, with prayer being a fundamental practice.

“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:38

Jesus emphasized the importance of prayer to His disciples, noting that it helps avoid temptation and strengthens faith. He demonstrated this by frequently retreating to pray as stated in Luke 5:16: “So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.” Prayer is a key weapon in battling external trials, temptations, and internal struggles. Paul advises us to be anxious for nothing and to bring our requests to God in prayer (Phil 4:6). Whether seeking spiritual strength, wisdom, comfort, or encouragement, God provides what we need when we ask. Because “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11

Paul also teaches the importance of praying with thanksgiving, which can be challenging during times of need. “My brethren, count if all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” James 1:2-3 We often thank God for His actions and blessings, recognizing His will and guidance even in trials. This gratitude can transform our perspective during difficult times, helping us see opportunities for growth. Reflecting on past instances where God has helped us fosters hope and encourages a thankful heart. When we pray with gratitude, we experience the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guarding our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
