Walking by Faith through Life’s Trials
In August 2018, I began feeling a dull pain at the base of my neck. It was manageable at first, so I didn’t think much of it. But as time passed, the pain worsened, spreading throughout my spine and ribs, and my neck became stiff. My family physician suspected a muscle strain or poor posture and recommended physical therapy. However, as the pain intensified, I was eventually referred to a neuromuscular specialist. After several tests, I found myself in the ER, surrounded by a chaotic scene of urgent cases. Hours passed before a doctor picked up my file and decided to take a closer look.
By the next morning, the diagnosis was in: Stage 4 cancer. The news was devastating, but I felt an unexpected calm. Finally, I knew what was wrong, and we could start fighting it. The doctor’s quick action, I believe, was God’s hand guiding him to me. The urgency of my condition meant that I had to undergo more tests and scans immediately, all marked “URGENT.” Despite the physical weakness that grew daily, God granted me the strength to endure the rigors of the tests.
When I met with the oncologist, she was surprised that I wasn’t taking any painkillers despite the severe pain in my bones. Her reaction only reinforced my gratitude for God’s grace in my life. Throughout this journey, I’ve felt His presence, sustaining me through every challenge.
On the day of my first chemo session, I was so weak that I fell out of bed, cracking a cervical vertebra. The pain was intense, yet I was determined to continue with the treatment. Despite the risk of paralysis, I opted for a neck collar instead of surgery, trusting God to carry me through. By the time I saw the spinal surgeon weeks later, I was moving without assistance, which astonished the medical team. They couldn’t believe I was sitting and walking on my own, given the severity of my injuries.
As Christians, we can entrust our cares to God through prayer and ask for strength to overcome life’s thorns. Even when the path ahead seems unclear or overwhelming, we have faith that God is guiding our steps. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). This journey has taught me that God’s plan, though mysterious at times, is always perfect and that He provides the strength we need to endure every trial.
These trials have revealed God’s incredible grace. Each day is a step forward, no matter how small, and I’ve learned to trust Him completely. Just like Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, I’ve prayed, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). I believe my experiences are talents given by God, and I must share them to glorify Him. As Jesus said, “There is nothing hidden which will not be revealed” (Mark 4:22). I continue this journey with faith, knowing that with God, there’s always hope for tomorrow. Amen.
