Cultivating Selfless Love in Marriage: Lessons from Ruth and Boaz

In today’s self-centered society, selfless love in marriage is challenging but begins with simple, considerate actions like sharing chores and being attentive to each other’s needs. While some couples argue over these daily matters, those with wisdom handle them calmly and thoughtfully. A husband who lovingly considers his wife’s well-being, even in small ways, fosters a deeper, more compassionate relationship.

When I think about marriage and family balance, I often reflect on the story of Ruth and Boaz from the Bible (Ruth 2-4). Their relationship is a beautiful example of how harmony within a family can be achieved through mutual respect, support, and a commitment to God’s will.

Ruth, a Moabite widow, chose to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, even after the death of her husband. Her decision to leave her homeland and take care of Naomi was a profound act of loyalty and selflessness. By abandoning her old identity and embracing Naomi’s faith, Ruth demonstrated the transformative power of commitment. This reminds me of 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”  I am inspired by Ruth’s words: “Where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God” (Ruth 1:16). This teaches me that true family balance requires a deep sense of responsibility and love, even when it means making personal sacrifices.

Boaz, a man of wealth and influence in Bethlehem, noticed Ruth’s hard work and dedication when she came to glean in his fields. He went out of his way to ensure her safety and provided for her needs. I am reminded of his words to Ruth: “It has been fully reported to me, all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, … The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel” (Ruth 2:11-12). Boaz later redeemed the lands of her dead husband and Naomi’s widow. Moreover, He married Ruth to perpetuate the name of the dead through her husband’s inheritance. Boaz ’s actions show me the importance of kindness and integrity in maintaining family balance. He recognized Ruth’s loyalty and the sacrifices she made for her family, and he treated her with the respect and care she deserved.

As I look at Ruth and Boaz’s relationship, I see that their balance was rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to doing what was right in God’s eyes. Ruth’s humility and willingness to work hard complemented Boaz’s generosity and protective nature. This reminds me that family balance is not just about dividing chores or responsibilities; it’s about recognizing and valuing each other’s contributions.

Today, where self-interest often takes precedence, I believe we can learn a lot from Ruth and Boaz. Their story challenges me to foster a spirit of cooperation and understanding in my own family. I am reminded that when I support my family members and work together with them toward common goals, our family becomes stronger and more balanced.

The biblical teaching here is clear: just as Ruth and Boaz created a family built on trust, respect, and faith in God, I am called to do the same. This kind of family balance not only brings harmony to my home but also glorifies God. In a world where family ties are often strained, I find comfort and guidance in the example set by Ruth and Boaz. Their story encourages me to build a family that honors God, just as their union ultimately did in the lineage of David and, eventually, Jesus Christ.
