In 2023, I find myself at the age of 32. Having grown up in China and spent a decade in the United States as a new immigrant, I’ve witnessed the vast differences in our world, from cultural disparities to social systems and ideological conflicts. As nations and individuals engage in competition and struggle, it’s no wonder that our hearts yearn for peace and trust among one another. During these times, we long for the fullness of love and the reassurance of our worth, hoping to bring happiness to those around us and to ourselves. But it can be challenging to walk that path. What is God’s teaching about how to deal with conflicts that threaten peace in the society or even in our own family? “Blessed are the peace makers, for they shall be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
According to the Bible, the root of our struggles lies in the bondage of sin. We can look at sin in a couple of ways: our inherited original sin, and sin that we committed on our own.
From the very beginning, our relationship with God has been established. As human beings, we come from God, our Creator. He is our Father, the source of our very existence. By nurturing our connection with Him, we can discover the love and peace we so deeply desire.
Throughout human history, God has been calling us to turn back to Him. He is the source of our existence, yet we do not pay attention to or recognize Him. What a grave mistake this is!
Jesus came into this world to reconnect us with our divine origin.
(Ephesians 1:10) “In the dispensation of the fullness of the times, He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.”
God unites with us through the Word made flesh, taking our judgment upon Himself. When we unite with God, we return to our origins. After we are baptized and accept His grace, we join this unity.
For the sin we committed on our own, we need to walk in the Lord by living a Godly lifestyle in order to have peace. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22–23) Peace is the product of love. There is no peace without love. God’s Holy Spirit not only defends against sin but it also attacks sin in arming us all the positive attributes of Godly character and behavior.
“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” (Galatians 5:16-18)
If we walk in the Spirit and allow ourselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit, we can live as loving and peaceful Christians in this world. When the time is fulfilled, when the Lord Jesus returns for the second time, we will enter into eternal unity, the Kingdom of Heaven!
