Living Spiritually Amid a Global Pandemic

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has not only disrupted global health but also magnified the urgency of spiritual preparedness for Christians, reminding many of biblical prophecies surrounding the second coming of Christ. This period of uncertainty and upheaval has cast a stark spotlight on how worldly distractions often distance individuals from God.

The pandemic has exerted a profound impact on mental health. Many grapples with feelings of anxiety and fear. Yet, these extraordinary circumstances should drive us to introspection. Jesus said, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars but see to it that you are not alarmed” (Mt 24:6). The world’s response to this crisis is a testament to our need for spiritual anchoring. For Christians, this period serves as a barometer of faith. Have we nurtured our relationship with God sufficiently during peaceful times? Or have we allowed worldly concerns to weaken our spiritual bonds? As the Apostle Paul reminds us, when we let God’s peace rule in our hearts, fear is replaced (Col 3:15).

The lockdowns, though restrictive, have also offered a silver lining. With paused routines, we have an unparalleled chance to draw closer to God, as Paul advises, making the best use of the time (Eph 5:16). Rather than mindlessly consuming media, we can delve deeper into scripture, fortifying our relationship with the Creator.

Moreover, the lockdown provides a unique opportunity for family bonding. This period allows for a rekindling of spiritual ties, enabling families to rebuild faith collectively, drawing us closer to Christ.

Though physical worship has been disrupted, technology offers alternative means. We can now connect with believers globally, sharing in online Bible studies, and evangelizing digitally. This period underscores the power of adaptability in worship, even in trying times.

Yet, while we shield ourselves from a physical virus, a spiritual pandemic lurks, one fomented by the adversary. Revelations mentions the “synagogue of Satan” (Rev 2:9), a force aiming to sow doubt and disconnection from God. This calls for unwavering diligence. Churches must uphold biblical truths, instilling sound doctrine and protecting believers from misinformation. As Paul wrote, with spiritual dedication, we can dismantle barriers to faith (2 Cor 10:4-5).

In conclusion, the COVID-19 crisis is a stark reminder of our transient existence and the significance of spiritual preparedness. It’s an opportunity to recenter our lives, focusing on God, family, and spiritual growth. The spiritual warfare we face necessitates unity, knowledge, and dedication, ensuring we’re armored against all threats, both physical and spiritual. As Solomon declared, the end of the matter is to “fear God and keep his commandments” (Eccl 12:13), for this sums up the duty of every believer.
