Mending the Rifts – Change the existing problems

If you ask me what the essence of mending my relationships with others is, I would say it’s “change.” Because change is the hardest for me, it’s also the most sincere. It’s like asking God for forgiveness: “repentance.” Repentance has two parts; the first is to regret one’s sins, “For I will declare my iniquity; I will be in anguish over my sin.” (Psalm 38:18 NKJV); the second is to change one’s behavior, “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord God. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions.” (Ezekiel 18:30 NKJV). If I do not change my behavior after reconciling with someone, I am bound to repeat the same mistakes and further disappoint others.

The people of Nineveh in the book of Jonah are a great example. Upon hearing God’s warning and rebuke, not only did they clothe everyone, from the greatest to the least, in sackcloth to show their sorrow, but they also fasted. And “let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.” (Jonah 3:8 NKJV), and thus they were forgiven by God. So, change is the ultimate secret to repairing relationships between people. The same holds true in marriage; if spouses care about each other, they will change and adapt through countless frictions.

Change is also the most crucial step in mending the rifts in my interpersonal relationships because “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV). Only in this way can we fundamentally repair our relationships with others, and this is a lesson for me.
