Filling the weaknesses of body and mind – A Promise to Growth
From our first cries to struggling crawls on the ground, to walking hesitantly with support, our journey of growth is filled with stumbles and falls, each step accompanied by countless trials and the watchful eyes of our elders. Although the path of our growth is fraught with hardships and pain, we progress from crying to singing, from only drinking milk to tasting the world’s delicacies, and from needing support to walk to running freely in the fields. Growth, with its bumps, weaknesses, falls, and tears, is a journey. Have we ever looked back to see how far we’ve come?
Isn’t it the same in Christ? “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). When we are baptized, we are like spiritual newborns. Nourished by spiritual food and tempered by life’s challenges with God’s constant support, we eventually mature. But how should we grow in this spiritual life?
First, we must introspect and acknowledge our weaknesses. Once we recognize them, we learn to transform. This starts with changing our attitude towards weaknesses; avoiding them means we never grow because facing them is the first step in growth.
Second, we must seek wisdom for growth. As we walk the path of the kingdom, we cannot rely solely on our wisdom because “the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” (James 3:17). Only the wisdom from God can steer us clear of carnal pitfalls.
Third, we need strength from God. Learning how to pray to God and experiencing Him is crucial. Praying is seeking direct help from God, feeling His power firsthand. Experiencing God in our lives also builds our faith, a vital process. All these experiences and prayers help us realize how much God supports us, and with His love and security, we can face any storm with confidence.
Fourth, setting goals to solidify our resolve and make a commitment to growth. “Therefore, we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:9). Whenever we feel weak in body and spirit, we must remember our commitment to growth. Since we are new in Christ, we should live out the new life, embodying Christ’s example.
God reigns on high yet supports us like a father beside us. We should seek wisdom from God our Father and live in the likeness of Christ. Let’s make a commitment to our spiritual growth, to mature into the full stature of adulthood. I encourage everyone to come to our church, to seek God’s guidance and the assurance of this life together.
