The highest level of work is the one God is calling for you. It does not necessarily mean that you need to be a pastor or a preacher. The greatest work you can do is the work that He has for you to do. God designed us to work. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15. It is part of what it means to rule the world that God made. (Genesis 1:26). However, there will be times when the world of work rules you. During times of famine in your job or career, you may take the easy way out however legitimate it may seem, by taking a higher paying job that takes you away from God.
Which is truly the better choice? Suffering in your current job or gaining wealth in “Egypt”?
When famine hit Canaan, Abraham suffered a lot and lost a lot of possessions, wealth, and many things. Likewise, when you are in a famine in your job, you suffer too. Abraham could remain and suffer in Canaan or go to Egypt where conditions were better. He chose Egypt and returned with much gold, silver, and livestock. But as it turned out, Abraham’s wealth from Egypt was a curse because it caused problems in his family. Money, wealth, and possessions caused Abrahm and Lot to separate and eventually caused Lot to fall away from God.

Any work or career that causes you to break away from Sabbath or obeying God except for reasons of necessity or mercy is not advisable. God’s teachings should come first. For example, if you are married, then you need to be responsible for providing for your family both financially and spiritually. How will this impact my family life? Will I still be able to be as God requires me to be wife, husband, child, servant of God etc.? Pray earnestly to God to seek His guidance. What job needs more Christians to shine and make a difference to the industry?

God gave us different gifts and talents. We are His vessels to serve different purposes. Pray earnestly to God for Him to reveal His purpose and use for you. It will be obvious which career path He wants to go based on your gifts and talents even if you didn’t think of it in the first place. Since I was a child, I excelled in art and painting with many national and international trophies won in art competitions. So, it was only logical for me to think that I would be an artist. But that wasn’t what God wanted for me. Instead, He opened up doors in the area of healthcare product development where with every invention that got developed and commercialized, I helped contribute towards caring for the well-being of people if not saving their lives. My artistic talents were reflected in the product design and launch campaigns. Things not only worked…they looked beautiful too! So, what’s your talent that you can put to good use?

Ask people who truly care for you. As mentioned earlier, the first go-to is God. Also ask people who are Godly and who truly know you—your gifts, your strengths, and your weaknesses. Pray together with them for as Jesus said, when two or more gather in His name, He will be there.

「耶和华所赐的福，使人富足，并不加上忧虑。 」 Proverbs 10:22. The blessings from the Lord, the possessions, the wealth, the gold, and silver from the Lord adds o worries to your life. But the possessions, the livestock, the gold, and siler from Egypt (as experienced by Abraham) leads you to remorse and regret in your life. So do not purely pursue the wealth of the world just for the sake of it. You must deeply feel if it’s good for you…the spiritual you and your loved ones.
