The journey of going to college is a turning point for many young adults. Being spiritually equipped and nourished all along the way increases your chances of surviving and thriving while in college and beyond. Here are a few tips on what to watch out for.
自制和時間管理
Self-control is very important as you now have the so-called “freedom” to do whatever, whenever and however you want. Since there is really no one e.g., parents, religious teachers to watch over you, the fear is your ability to be independent, which means, “self-control”. With no one telling you what to do, it is so easy to slip, trip and fail. There is a high correlation between your spiritual life viability or intelligence and your ability to sanctify everyday experience. If your spiritual life is not guarded well, then you are more prone to deter from what God has planned for you. God loves you and wants the best for you.
A key aspect of self-control is managing your time. Time for learning, praying, and balancing your life right from the beginning as a young adult. The more disciplined you are in managing your time wisely especially your time for God, the more likely you are to succeed and avoid tripping over thresholds and falling into pot holes in life. There are three measures of value: time, risk and yield (results), the most important of which is time. We do not know what time Jesus will come again but we need to be fully prepared for His second coming. He told us so.
抵抗誘惑 (Vuthy的侄女)
Quite often, we waste our time by giving in to temptations e.g., screen/device time, social and worldly activities which can injure your spiritual well-being. Again, because there is no one physically there to stop you, it is too easy and apparently harmless to participate in social activities to help cope with loneliness and pressure from school. We have been there…procrastinating on doing term papers and turning to friends for fun. In fact, sometimes doing dishes seem attractive compared to doing your papers. Certain people of the opposite sex may even appear very attractive to you and you may be tempted to cross the morality line because people around you are doing it. Your ability to resist such temptations is higher when you lead a disciplined spiritual lifestyle which serves as your guardrails from committing sin—sexual immorality.
A pastor shared his niece’s experience in college where she met a guy in college whom she described as cute. [21:26] “Uncle! There is a really cute guy who lives next to me!” He lived next to her! Of course, he’s tall and he’s a swimmer, and he’s Asian. So of course, it’s hard to find a tall swimmer Asian, right? So, she was asking, “What should I do?” I told her, “You must cut down that tree.” Because it’s the tree of knowledge of good and evil. You don’t want to get to know it! Of course, I prayed with her. The handsome, cute guy then sent her messages. His niece felt good and important. But the pastor said, “Erase that thing right away. You must erase it! Whatever he writes on it, just erase it!” Why? Because, even in the beginning, there’s no harm done at all because it’s very simple, right? First, it’s just, “Hello” and then later it becomes, “How are you?” You wouldn’t want “how are you” to come around, right?
[24:00] So he told her to erase it, and she prayed about it. Then, thank God, he moved out of her dorm only about four to five months later! And then she saw him again on campus! Do you know what she said? She said, “I can’t believe that I thought he was handsome!” When Satan brings a person to you, you become blindsided! You do not know what is good and what is bad! So, you must be very careful!
在職業生涯中優先考慮神
After you are done with school and start working, you will start to see money that you made. You want to make more money and be more successful in your career. The ambition appears attractive but the reality is that you pay a very high price which may erode your spiritual life. Taking time away from God and investing it in your career is the beginning of weakening your ability to fight temptations and doing God’s will. Plus, your worry list starts building up and getting longer. “所以我告訴你們,不要為生命憂慮吃甚麼,喝甚麼;為身體憂慮,穿甚麼。生命不勝於飲食嗎? 身體不勝於衣裳嗎?你們看那天上的飛鳥,也不種,也不收,也不積蓄在倉裏,你們的天父尚且養活牠。你們不比飛鳥貴重得多嗎? 你們哪一個能用思慮使壽數多加一刻呢?” 馬太福音6:25-27
找到適合的婚姻伴侶
If you find the right person, then marriage is like heaven on earth. The reverse is true if you chose the wrong one. In a relationship, commitment, sense of responsibility (which is in the present) and accountability (which is forever) are crucial for you to select your future spouse. It involves a willingness to sacrifice. The highest level of love is that of sacrifice…Jesus died on the cross for us.
Finding the right spouse enables you both to be yoked together in the Lord. You share the same value system and share the same journey in faith and actions. Your standards of success are Godly. The inner self is more important than the outward appearance for the Lord looks at our hearts.
