It’s easy to ask others, “Who are you?” but it is much harder to turn that question inward and ask, “Who am I?” To achieve balance, we must strip away the layers of titles, wealth, health, and even physical existence to uncover our true selves.

First, let’s reflect on who we are beyond our roles and possessions. Who are you when your job title is taken away? Who are you without your wealth, health, or even your physical body? The Bible reminds us, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26). Our identity must go deeper than the external; it resides in our soul, the part of us that remains when everything else fades away.

Understanding our dual nature is crucial. We are both physical beings with temporal needs and spiritual beings with eternal significance. This duality creates tension within us. As Paul describes, “For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice” (Romans 7:19). We are in a constant battle between our fleshly desires and our spiritual aspirations. Recognizing this struggle is the first step toward finding balance.

In this journey of self-discovery and balance, we are also guided by a higher purpose. The love of Christ compels us to live not for ourselves, but for Him who died for us and rose again. As Paul writes, “For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). This perspective reshapes our identity and priorities, reminding us that our lives are not our own but are meant to reflect the love and sacrifice of Christ.

Lastly, we need to prioritize our spiritual health alongside our physical well-being. While it’s important to take care of our bodies, we must not neglect our souls. Paul advises, “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). True balance involves caring for both body and soul, preparing for this life and the one to come.

In conclusion, achieving life balance requires us to know ourselves deeply—beyond our roles, wealth, and physical existence. We must acknowledge our dual nature, be guided by Christ’s love, and prioritize our spiritual health. Only then can we truly live balanced and fulfilled lives.

We cordially invited you to attend the Chicago True Jesus Church’s Fall Evangelical Service and Spiritual Convocation this September.
