This responsibility isn’t just a social expectation—it’s a moral obligation deeply rooted in our faith. The Bible reminds us of this duty with a clear command: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a divine directive that carries the promise of blessings for those who obey.

Today, things have changed significantly. Many of the elderly, particularly those from the Baby Boomer generation, are more educated and financially secure than their parents were. This shift has led to a lower expectation that children will care for their aging parents. However, as Christians, we are called to look beyond societal trends and uphold the principles laid out in Scripture. The apostle Paul reinforces this in Ephesians 6:2, emphasizing the importance of honoring our parents. He also issues a stern warning in 1 Timothy 5:8, stating that those who fail to care for their own families are worse than non-believers.

When we reflect on the story of Jacob and Joseph, we see a beautiful example of family support. Jacob spent 17 years of his life caring for Joseph before he was sold into slavery. Years later, when Jacob was old and frail, Joseph repaid that care by looking after his father in Egypt. This mutual care is a powerful reminder of the importance of reciprocity in family relationships.

As we continue to care for our parents and guide our children, it’s essential to remember that our faith brings transformation to every aspect of our lives, including our family relationships. The Bible tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This renewal through Christ empowers us to approach our roles in the family with a fresh perspective. We are no longer bound by the limitations of our past or the mistakes of previous generations. Instead, we are called to embrace this new life and bring the love and grace of Christ into our homes. This transformation helps us to honor our parents in a way that reflects our faith and to raise our children with the values that align with God’s will.

However, caring for our parents goes beyond just providing for their physical needs. It also involves ensuring that we do not bring them shame. The story of Eli’s sons, who brought disgrace upon their father and Israel, serves as a cautionary tale. We must strive to live in a way that brings honor to our parents and our family name, just as Proverbs 4:1-4 encourages us to heed the instruction of our parents and live by their teachings.

As we grow older, we may find ourselves disagreeing with our children about how they raise their own kids. It’s important to remember that while we can offer guidance, the ultimate responsibility lies with the parents. We should support them without undermining their authority, and trust that they are doing their best.

In all these things, let’s keep our priorities in check. Technology and advancements are great, but they should never replace our focus on God, our faith, and the harmony in our homes. By doing so, we can create a balanced family life that honors God and brings peace to all generations involved.

We would love for you to join us at our church for our upcoming Fall Evangelical Service and Spiritual Convocation in September.
