Self-acceptance is recognizing my true self, the self that God sees and knows, aware of my strengths and limitations. It is a humbling acknowledgment that who I am and what I can achieve is by God’s grace alone. In Romans 12:3, it is taught that we should not think of ourselves more highly than we ought to, a verse that guides me away from pride and toward a realistic view of myself.

Pride can be deceptive, painting a picture of oneself that exceeds reality, fueling a dangerous comparison with others. Galatians 6:4 teaches us to test our own actions without comparing ourselves to someone else, which helps me to stay grounded in the truth of my identity as a child of God, rather than succumbing to false superiority. The Bible warns us through the downfall of Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:28-37) and Herod (Acts 12:20-23) that pride precedes destruction, and I take heed not to claim personal glory for achievements that rightfully belong to God’s provision and strength.

I often reflect on Philippians 4:13, which reminds me that it is Christ who strengthens me, allowing me to accomplish the tasks set before me. This scripture reassures me that self-acceptance is not prideful but rather a biblical principle that encourages a healthy self-image rooted in divine truth. It is a balance between knowing my worth in God’s eyes and remaining humble before Him.

Furthermore, my understanding of self-care has evolved. I see it now not as an act of selfishness but as a necessary discipline to maintain a balanced life in service to God and others. Self-care encompasses nurturing my emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical health, ensuring I am well-equipped to serve effectively. As I take care of myself, my focus remains outward, aligning with Philippians 2:3-5, which encourages considering others above oneself. In contrast to selfishness, which turns inward for personal gain, self-care in my life is a dedication to being a better instrument for God’s purposes, to be a sturdy vessel through which His love and work can flow unimpeded.

We warmly invite you to come to the True Jesus Church’s bi-annual Evangelical Service and Spiritual Convocation. See details below.

18-21 April, 2024 Evangelical Service and Spiritual Convocation

Thursday, 18 April, 2024 6:50PM to 8:10PM
Friday and Saturday, 19-20 April, 2024 9:00AM to 8:10PM
Sunday, 21 April, 2024 9:00AM to 1:00PM
Complimentary lunch and dinner will be served.

Please find our church location below:

4N550 Church Road
Bensenville, IL 60106
Google Maps

For online streaming, please click here.

For regular service hours, please click here.

Email us at ilovejesus@tjc-chicago.org

Self-Embrace Versus Hubris: Understanding Self-Acceptance in the Light of Faith In my journey of faith and understanding, I have learned to differentiate self-acceptance from pride.
