Look around the world—regardless of wealth or status, gender or age, whether in civilized societies or remote tribes—people express their devotion to a higher power. Temples, churches, and shrines fill every corner of the world, and people worship in various ways, demonstrating this deeply ingrained human nature (Romans 1:19, NKJV).

While worshiping God is reasonable and appropriate, if we worship the wrong god, our efforts are in vain, and we fall into foolishness. Just as eating is necessary for survival, consuming the wrong food can be harmful rather than beneficial. Likewise, knowing that we should worship is wise, but understanding whom to worship and how to worship is true wisdom.

Two Attitudes

One group of people approaches worship with a careless and indifferent attitude. They acknowledge that worship is necessary, yet they fail to discern or carefully choose whom they worship. As a result, they worship in vain, bring harm upon themselves, and become fools.

There are many such people today—they do not know whom they worship, nor do they investigate the origins of their faith. They blindly follow others, imitating the religious practices of those around them without thoughtful examination. This type of worship is nothing more than blind superstition. In the end, they gain nothing from it, and instead, they become a source of ridicule for those who seek truth. Should we continue in such an attitude, failing to discern and simply worshiping gods we do not know or have no relationship with?

In contrast, another group of people worships with caution and sincerity. They carefully examine the nature of the god they worship, diligently study, and make an informed choice. They know whom they have believed (2 Timothy 1:12, NKJV), and they understand their relationship with the One they worship (Acts 17:25-26, NKJV). Their worship is a result of an enlightened decision, free from superstition, blind adherence, or confusion. This is the attitude that every wise person should have when it comes to worshiping God.

Two Motives

Some people worship only for worldly gain. Their focus is solely on material benefits, and they approach worship as a means to gain personal advantages. Some seek wealth; others desire longevity and peace; some pray for children, job opportunities, or even success in learning a foreign language, finding a spouse, or studying abroad. They prioritize short-term gains and overlook the greater and more meaningful purpose of worship.

However, there is another group of people who worship God for eternal blessings. They recognize that life is fleeting, that we are merely sojourners on this earth (1 Chronicles 29:15, NKJV), and that everything in this world is temporary and will soon pass away (1 Peter 1:24-25; 1 John 2:17, NKJV).

Therefore, they are willing to forsake worldly pursuits to attain the greater and everlasting inheritance (Hebrews 10:32-34; 11:25-26, NKJV). They understand that eternal life is far more valuable than all the treasures of this world (Matthew 16:26, NKJV). We should seek the unseen, eternal blessings of the life to come, for this is the true purpose of worship.

Two Outcomes

If a person approaches worship with a careless attitude, seeking only temporary gains and worshiping created things instead of the true God, their end will be tragic. Those who do not know the true God and mistakenly worship idols will suffer loss in this life and captivity in the spiritual realm.

The devil uses idols as tools of deception, leading people into sin and rebellion against the true God. Through idolatry, Satan enslaves and manipulates people, inflicting suffering in this life and ultimately condemning them to eternal destruction in hell alongside him (Revelation 21:8; 20:10, NKJV). This is a terrifying and sorrowful fate!

However, if we choose wisely and worship the true and living Creator, approaching Him with spirit and truth, our outcome will be one of blessing and joy. Scripture declares: “Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you.” (Job 22:21, NKJV) ， Knowing and worshiping the one true God wholeheartedly will bring us great peace and true freedom in this life. Moreover, we will inherit the kingdom of God prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9; Matthew 25:34, NKJV), where we will enjoy eternal blessings.

This is the stark contrast between the two paths. Therefore, let us worship the Lord Jesus Christ so that we may experience peace in this life and eternal joy in the life to come.

We warmly welcome you to our upcoming Spring 2025 Evangelical Service and Spiritual Convocation (ESSC).
